Lisa M. Hughes is the President of VMA. She is a lawyer in private practice who focuses in the areas of Will and trust preparation, powers of attorney, guardianships and conservatorships, administering estates of decedents and incapacitated individuals, and the requisite tax and asset-protection planning that naturally complement those areas of the law. Specialized challenges for certain populations are addressed often in her practice, such as: succession planning for closely-held businesses, same-sex couples, incapacitated beneficiaries and certain elder law challenges, including special needs trusts and microboards.
Ms. Hughes is licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. She adds to the collective knowledge base by serving as a member of the Board of Governors of the Trusts and Estates Section of the Virginia State Bar where she participates in planning legal education seminars and publications in the trusts and estates field. Ms. Hughes is a Public Safety Trainer with the Commonwealth Autism Service (www.autismva.org) which is working to train attorneys, judges and other court-related personnel on how to interact more safely and effectively with citizens on the autism spectrum. Ms. Hughes serves as legal counsel to Spectrum Housing Foundation, a tax exempt organization which facilitates supports for disabled adults so that they may live as independently as possible.
